September Means Grouper Time in Tampa Bay

For many Gulf Coast anglers, September isn't just the beginning of fall—it's the return of one of our favorite traditions: the opening of gag grouper season on September 1st.

If you've never tangled with a big Gulf grouper, you're missing one of the greatest fights our waters have to offer. These fish aren't called reef donkeys for nothing. Hook into one and you'll quickly find out they fight dirty, diving straight back to the bottom and trying to cut you off in the rocks before you can even figure out what happened.

And if you manage to get one into the boat? Well, you've just landed one of the finest meals swimming in the Gulf of America.

A Season That's Been Through Some Changes

Old-timers remember when grouper season seemed to last forever. Years ago, anglers enjoyed nearly six months of grouper fishing. Then came stricter regulations, and the season was shortened dramatically, leaving us with only about two weeks to chase these incredible fish.

This year, we're getting a little breathing room with the entire month of September open for harvest, and that's welcome news for anglers all along the Tampa Bay area.

Plenty of Grouper Around

From the wheelhouse of the Five O'Clock Charlie, things look pretty encouraging.

Over the past several months, while targeting snapper, grunts, and other reef species, we've caught and released a lot of grouper. Some have been nice keepers, while others were true bruisers that gave our customers an unforgettable fight before heading back to the bottom.

From what we're seeing on the water, these fish certainly don't appear to be in short supply. The reefs have been holding good numbers, and that's great news as we head into September.

One Heck of a Fight

Grouper fishing isn't for the faint of heart.

When that rod doubles over and the drag starts screaming, you've got only a few seconds to turn the fish before it buries itself in the structure. It's a tug-of-war where the fish usually has the home-field advantage.

I've seen grown men laugh, yell, and occasionally invent new curse words while fighting a big grouper. I've also seen plenty of sore arms and huge smiles when the fish finally hits the deck.

That's what makes grouper fishing so addictive.

The Reward at the Dinner Table

As much fun as they are to catch, grouper may be even better on the plate.

Fresh grouper fillets are hard to beat—grilled, blackened, fried, or turned into fish tacos. The meat is firm, mild, and absolutely delicious. For many of our customers, taking home a few fresh grouper fillets is the perfect ending to a day on the water.

A Public Service Announcement – Know Before You Go

As excited as we all are to see a full month of grouper season return, it's important that every angler knows and follows the rules. Fisheries management has changed quite a bit over the years, and responsible fishing helps ensure these magnificent fish remain abundant for future generations.

Current Gulf Gag Grouper Regulations

• Season: September 1 through September 30
• Minimum Size: 24 inches total length
• Daily Bag Limit: 2 gag grouper per person
• Aggregate Grouper Limit: 4 total grouper per person per day in any legal combination of grouper species
• Charter Captain and Crew: No harvest allowed while operating as a for-hire vessel
• Landing Requirement: Fish must be landed with head and fins intact
• State Reef Fish Survey: Private anglers targeting or possessing reef fish must be registered in Florida's State Reef Fish Survey.

Regulations can change from year to year, so always check with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) before your trip to make sure you have the latest information.
