For nearly three decades, I wore a law enforcement badge.

It was a career filled with responsibility, long hours, difficult calls, friendships, sacrifice, and the privilege of serving others. Law enforcement became more than what I did for a living. For many years, it was a large part of who I was.

Then came retirement.

Like many first responders, I discovered that walking away from the job was only the beginning. The harder question was figuring out what came next.

For me, the answer was waiting on the waters of Tampa Bay.

I traded my badge for a captain’s license, California for Florida, and patrol work for a completely different kind of service. What began as a retirement dream eventually became Five O’Clock Charlie Boat Tours & Charters.

That journey became the inspiration for my upcoming book:

More Than a Story About Fishing

This is not simply a book about running a charter boat.

It is a story about starting over.

It is about leaving behind a career that defined much of my adult life and discovering that purpose doesn’t have to end when one chapter closes.

Along the way, I became a rookie again.

I learned the waters of Tampa Bay. I learned how to build a small charter business from the ground up. I made mistakes, survived a few expensive lessons, dealt with hurricanes, red tide, COVID, broken equipment, unpredictable weather, and plenty of days when the fish apparently forgot they had reservations.

But I also discovered something I wasn’t expecting.
Peace.

From the Badge to the Bay

Readers will travel with me from my final years in law enforcement to my new life as Captain John.

The book shares stories about:

  • My transition from nearly thirty years in law enforcement into retirement and a second career.
  • Moving across the country and beginning again in Florida.
  • Learning Tampa Bay and discovering places such as Egmont Key, Terra Ceia Bay, the Manatee River, Anna Maria Island, and the waters of lower Tampa Bay.
  • The beginnings of Five O’Clock Charlie Boat Tours & Charters.
  • The customers and families who became friends and returned year after year.
  • Dolphins, manatees, snook, redfish, cobia, grouper, sharks, and some of the other characters that share my office.
  • Business lessons learned the hard way—including my memorable education at the hands of Groupon.
  • Hurricanes, red tide, COVID, engine problems, and the challenges of keeping a small charter business alive.
  • The brotherhood among local charter captains who help one another when things go wrong on the water.
  • Trips with disabled veterans, Gold Star Families, children catching their first fish, marriage proposals, celebrations of life, and moments aboard the boat that I will never forget.
  • And, of course, a few stories that could only happen on a charter boat.

The Boat Became My Office

Today my office doesn’t have fluorescent lights, cubicles, or a time clock.

  • It has tides.
  • It has sunrises over Tampa Bay, dolphins swimming alongside the boat, screaming fishing reels, afternoon thunderstorms, salt spray, and sunsets that can stop an entire boat full of people from talking.
  • Over the years, thousands of guests have stepped aboard Five O’Clock Charlie.
  • Some came to catch their first fish.
  • Some came to see a dolphin.
  • Some wanted to explore Egmont Key.
  • Some simply needed a few hours away from everything happening back on shore.
  • Without realizing it at the time, many of them became part of this story.

A Book About Second Chances

Although my story begins with law enforcement and continues aboard a charter boat, I believe Trading My Badge for a Boat is really about something much bigger.

  • It is about what happens when life changes.
  • It is about identity after retirement.
  • It is about having the courage to become a beginner again.
  • It is about discovering that the next chapter of your life may look nothing like the one before it—and that may be exactly what you need.
  • You don’t necessarily need a boat.
  • But sometimes you do need the courage to leave the dock.

Trading My Badge for a Boat: Finding Peace, Purpose, and a Second Career on the Waters of Tampa Bay is currently being prepared for publication and is expected to be available by December 2026.

A licensed Master Mariner and owner of Five O’Clock Charlie Boat Tours & Charters, Captain John has spent more than a decade introducing families, visitors, veterans, and anglers to the fishing, wildlife, history, and natural beauty of Tampa Bay and Florida’s Gulf Coast.
