July Fishing Report – Tampa Bay & Anna Maria Island

July has definitely brought the Florida heat, but don't let that fool you—the fishing has been outstanding if you're willing to get out early or fish the evening tides. The first few hours after sunrise have been producing some excellent action throughout Tampa Bay, the Manatee River, Terra Ceia Bay, and the waters surrounding Anna Maria Island.

The stars of the show this month have been snook. Many of the larger fish have moved toward the beaches, passes, and structure where they're preparing for their annual spawn. Live threadfin herring, pinfish, and whitebait have been producing some exciting strikes. Watching a big snook explode on a live bait never gets old, and it's one of the highlights of summer fishing.

Redfish continue to cooperate around mangrove shorelines, oyster bars, and shallow grass flats during the early morning hours. They're feeding aggressively before the sun gets high, and we've been catching quality fish on live bait as well as artificial lures when conditions are right.

The speckled sea trout bite has been very consistent over the grass flats. While there have been plenty of keeper-sized trout, we're also seeing some beautiful larger fish mixed in. As always, handle those larger breeding trout carefully and release them quickly so they'll be around for years to come.

If you enjoy a rod-bending fight, jack crevalle have been crashing bait schools throughout the bay. These fish don't know they're not 100 pounds and will test both your tackle and your stamina. They're one of the hardest-fighting fish you'll find in Tampa Bay.

For anglers looking to bring home dinner, mangrove snapper fishing around bridges, docks, and nearshore reefs has been excellent. A little patience and a lively bait have been the key to filling the cooler with some of Florida's finest table fare.

The nearshore reefs have also been producing Spanish mackerel, grunts, porgies, and an occasional cobia for anglers willing to make the short run into the Gulf of Mexico. You never know what may show up on these reefs this time of year, which keeps every trip exciting.

Captain's Tip of the Month

July is not the month to underestimate the Florida sun. Bring plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing, apply sunscreen often, and don't forget a good pair of polarized sunglasses. The fish love the warm water—but you probably won't if you're not prepared! Fortunately, my boat has plenty of shade to help keep everyone comfortable throughout the trip.

One thing we've been watching closely is the afternoon weather pattern. July often brings quick-moving thunderstorms that seem to appear out of nowhere. We keep a close eye on the radar and always put safety first. That's one advantage of fishing with an experienced local captain who knows when it's time to head for the dock.

Whether you're a seasoned angler trying to catch your personal best or a family looking to make lasting memories, July continues to be one of the most productive months on Tampa Bay. Every trip is different, and that's part of what makes fishing here so special.

I want to thank everyone who has joined me on the water this summer. Your repeat business, referrals, and smiling faces make every day behind the helm worthwhile. I truly appreciate the opportunity to share this incredible fishery with visitors and locals alike.

If you're thinking about getting out on the water, don't wait too long. Summer dates fill quickly, especially the early morning charters when both the temperatures and the fishing are at their best.

I'll see you on the water!
